How do I model selling my primary home and my vacation home becoming my primary home so that when I sell it 3 years later I can use the tax exemption?

When you say, "when I sell it three years later" do you mean when you sell the vacation home three years later?

Did you try just using first sale of home for primary and first change of home in Vacation? But then you want to have a second change of vacation home in which case you run the reverse using a second change of primary home.

I think it might show a cap gains tax on that second one (see the last report under details for the joint filer worksheet). If it does, then I'm not sure. Could you just offset that with a special receipt?
